LIFE LATELY

LIFE LATELY | MEDICINE, NEW TREATS & IKEA

Ugh. It’s that time of year again. Hayfever season. Early Spring is when for the next few weeks, I pop a Piriteze every morning to keep the cloudy fug of my allergies away. Allergies to nature aside, I’ve been battling to keep a cold at bay. I feel like Pac Man swallowing hundreds of little medicated dots. Let’s see what else…I’m currently a sleepy zombie because for the past two nights in a row, my cat has brought home a mouse at the crack of dawn (5am, every time!) I managed to corral the terrified mouse into an old Ugg boot which I then threw outside to release it to freedom. Oh, and I’ve currently got a loaf of banana bread baking in the oven and the house smells uh-mazing.

My poor old Ray Ban aviators had been shoved into a rucksack one too many times, and after a good decade together, it was time to think about a replacement. I spotted Quay Australia– their aviators had mirrored lenses and then saw Jacey from Damsel in Dior in an oversized matte black pair of Wayfarer-style ones. As they were only £40 each, I got the aviators (called the High Key) in black/silver and the After Hours in black/smoke. I LOVE THEM.

With Robin away this weekend, I did what I do best when I have the house to myself- pottering about! On Sunday when the sun made an appearance, I threw open the doors into the garden all day and life felt GOOD.

Friends came over and I was in the mood to cook (a rarity nowadays) Over the weekend I made a breakfast bake (eggy, bready, brioche and sausage meat), smooshed some avocados for guacamole, and baked a banana bread. Sunday dinner was a slow cooked beef with ginger and star anise. This all means of course that for the rest of the week, it’ll be Uber Eats or pizza next door.

I had a big chuckle over this PCO cartoon, the ONLY thing even remotely fun or funny about the disorder. The downside is, my new treatment now involves a cocktail of drugs that at the best of times makes me feel like I have been punched in the ovaries and I’ve basically had a constant stomach ache since March. PCOS, it’s just a big old punch up all around really (if it had a theme, it’d be The Ballroom Blitz)

Beauty treats! This month I bought the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz and a dupe Artis foundation brush from Bdellium. Both of these are a makeup routine revelation. The Brow Wiz makes it easier to fill in the gaps in my brows and as for the brush, the bristles are densely packed and super soft. The original Artis brushes are mega bucks, but this one was only £12 from Beauty Bay (and the Brow Wiz is £15)

Apparently going to Ikea on a Bank Holiday was a great idea HA HA HA. We survived though and came home with the Hemnes day bed for the guest room. Robin beasted through the assembly and I have ordered bedding and cushions from La Redoute. All that effort to basically make what is already…Louie’s room and Louie’s bed. Once all the toot is booted out, Casa Shek is open for guests. Though you’ll probably have to share with Louie.

I’ve got tickets to the live orchestra show of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone this Sunday at the Royal Albert Hall (although, I’m ‘wait and see’ about it in case I’m still feeling poorly)

We have a trip coming up next month, and I’m in a tizz over 1) what to pack and 2) will it clash with my treatment (so far, it’s looking likely) but I am trying to be zen about everything because last night I felt the flitter flutter of anxiety trying to sprout and that shit needs to be nipped in the bud. Wow. That’s a downer.

I watched Passenger in bed last night and you know…I actually liked it. It was quite sweet actually. So there, this post has now ended on a nice note.

Have a good week everyone!

  • Sorry to hear you’ve had a shitty time with PCOS lately, but i’m really glad you’ve still got loads of reasons to be upbeat and cheerful! 🙂 Alice xxx

  • I’m so intrigued by those foundation brushes! I’ve done two Ikea trips since I moved to Dubai and I could do with a third to get some final bits but it’s always SO busy and going alone feels like such an ordeal! Hope you start feeling better soon x

    • Me too! But i couldn’t bring myself to splurge on the expensive ones and came across these on Beauty Bay. It saves me a lot more time in the morning and I get a quicker, nicer finish than my old beauty blender- definitely recommend giving it a go!

Ooh I hope you feel better soon so you get to go to that Harry Potter concert – that sounds amazing! x

  • We have the Ikea Hemnes bed in our guest room and I never want to take it apart or move it again, it’s such a massive, heavy beast! x

    • it’s SO heavy! Getting it from the Ikea aisles, onto the clumsy trolleys, and then loading it into the car was not fun (neither was the squashed journey home in it)

  • i love Quay Australia, they really do do the best affordable sunglasses, I bought a pair last year and I get compliments on them every time I wear them, they look so much more expensive than they are!

The only argument we had when we were buying a house was in Ikea, has to be the most stressful place in the world! Glad you made it out alive 😉

    • I love how affordable they are too! Their shipping is so fast as well, I was really impressed.

(and Ikea, it was a military effort to get in, load up and out there asap!)

  • Love your catch up Angela, Ikea always seem like a good idea until you see all the crowds! Those Quay sunnies are gorgeous, so affordable too….might treat myself 😉 The ABW is my go to brow pencil as well. Love seeing live orchestral shows, last one I saw was of Breakfast at Tiffany, hope you feel better to see it!

    • thanks Hanh! Quay Australia, highly HIGHLY recommend! They have free next day shipping too! I’m loving the ABH brow wiz so far, it’s cut minutes out of my makeup routine. I used to use the pomade dip but the pencil form is much more convenient.
