Ilove bowling. I blame Grease 2 for this “let’s bowl, let’s bowl, let’s rock n’roll” attitude towards the game. It’s the only time I ever feel competitive! Brooklyn Bowl, newish addition to the O2 promises you will Eat, Drink, Rock and Roll. I was up for a game.
I think Brooklyn Bowl is having a bit of an identity crisis. Is it a bowling alley? A restaurant? A club? A bar? We had to wait over an hour for a free lane…even though we counted 4 lanes empty. The dance floor was huge but empty, the bar area small so there was nowhere really to sit and at least have a drink while we waited. The restaurant wouldn’t let us inside to wait either so we were squished into a tiny corner to wait for our buzzer to signal that we could go and bowl. It’s such a vast space and I don’t think it’s been used to it’s best potential. The staff behind the counter couldn’t be bothered when we complained about the waiting time and fobbed us off with “it’ll get busy, trust me” Err that’s great, but we were interested in the now!
Brooklyn Bowl charge by the time, the minute you walk through the door to the bowling area, rather than the number of games you play. Unlike other bowling places, they also charge £2.50 for the bowling shoes. So far, so fussy. Apart from the hiccup at the beginning of the night, we did have a good time bowling. There are gorgeous Chesterfield sofas to sit on and table service. I had a great big glass of frozen margarita- a grown up slushie! It was pretty perfect. We munched on fried calamari, french fries, messy pork sliders and a basket of fried chicken. They’re pretty bang on with the whole ‘dive’ menu theme.
Cheesy music ensured we were twisting and mash potato-ing and getting more gutter balls than strikes. I would go back again, because 1) THAT FROZEN MARGARITA and 2) maybe it was just the crummy attitude from the staff at the beginning of the evening that dampened the spirit a little. For now, Rowans, the original divey bowling alley in Finsbury Park still holds the trophy for a true unpretentious dive (that won’t charge you for the shoes!)
